Itinerary

Day One

Board the coach at your pick-up point, and travel to Dover to cross the Channel and join Olympia in Frankfurt. After a first evening meal, head to the ship's bar, or retire to your cabin, as the ship sails out into the river to begin your cruise.

Day Two

Today Olympia cruises through the meandering Main, arriving this afternoon in Wertheim. Discover the medieval town - famed for its glassblowing and overlooked by one of Germany's most impressive castles - on this afternoon's included walking tour, which will include the opportunity to see the craftsmen at work.

Day Three

This morning finds Olympia moored in Wurzburg, an ancient prince-bishopric nestled beneath steep, vine-covered slopes. Enjoy an optional guided tour of the UNESCO-listed Residenz, a magnificent Baroque palace overlooking the city's altstadt (old town).

Day Four

After following the Main's meandering course upriver, Olympia arrives in beautiful Bamberg around lunchtime. Take the shuttle bus from the ship into the city centre and discover its beautiful altstadt of little bridges and islets on an optional walking tour led by an expert local guide.

This evening, Olympia begins her journey through the extraordinary Main-Danube Canal.

Day Five

Olympia arrives early this morning in Nuremberg, its rebuilt half-timbered houses and narrow lanes seemingly unchanged in centuries. Join our optional tour and see the ancient Rathaus (parliament building), the twin-spired Sebalduskirche and the imposing fortress of the Kaiserburg.

This evening Olympia continues her transit of the canal.

Day Six

Olympia enters the Danube at Kelheim, where the river is overlooked by high cliffs. Disembark to visit the Weltenburg monastery - site of a near-thousand-year-old brewery - perched between the river and cliff-top.

Alternatively, remain on board for the cruise to majestic Regensburg. Discover this wonderfully preserved medieval trading city on an afternoon's walking tour, before re-boarding Olympia for her last evening cruise.

Day Seven

This morning Olympia arrives in Passau, at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, and at the border between Bavaria and Austria. Join our optional tour of the Italianate city and enjoy a recital in the ornate St Stephan's Cathedral, played on the 17,000-pipe church organ - Europe's largest.

This afternoon, you're free to explore. Enjoy a last dinner on board as Olympia moors here overnight, and perhaps take in some of the atmosphere of the charming altstadt.

Day Eight

Bid farewell to Olympia this morning and her crew this morning, and begin your journey home, staying overnight in a hotel in the Cologne area.

Day Nine

Leave the hotel this morning, continuing your journey back to the UK.

Further Information

Joining your holiday

Your final travel documents, including the exact time and place of departure, will be sent to you approximately 10 days prior to departure, providing all payments have been made. We are unable to give exact departure times before this.

Meal arrangements

Where meals are not included, your coach driver will ensure there are suitable stops made for you to purchase and enjoy lunch and/or dinner each day.

Alternative itineraries

Please note that for 22nd September 2017 departures, the cruise operates a reverse itinerary from Passau to Frankfurt. All included calls and highlights remain the same.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Optional shore excursions

Optional excursions are available on all cruises, and we recommend that you book now to secure your place. If the number of bookings needed to operate any excursion is not reached, the excursion may be cancelled. In this case your payment will be refunded in full.

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsory, but from experience we know that many passengers like to leave gratuities for the crew. An envelope will be left in your cabin for this purpose.

Pre-paid drinks package

Spend just £17.50 per person per night, and enjoy unlimited draught beer, house wine and soft drinks (including water, tea and coffee) between 10am and midnight while on board Olympia. All other drinks are not included. The drinks package must be purchased by every person occupying a particular cabin.

Dress code

The dress code on board and ashore is casual. After 7pm, in the lounge and restaurant, shorts are not permitted, and footwear and a shirt or T-shirt must be worn.

Luggage

Where possible, non-rigid suitcases are easier to store within your cabin.

Drinking water

The tap water on board is safe to drink, but may not be to your taste due to the purification system.

Itinerary changes

On rare occasions, the Captain may need to alter the Cruise Itinerary. If this happens, the Cruise Manager will keep passengers informed.

Cabin sizes

The majority of cabins on board are 10.5m square. Single cabins are approximately 7.7m square. (These measurements include the bathroom.) Standard Promenade cabins are 15m square and most have double beds (which do not convert to sofas), but they do not have a table or stool and will by subject to engine noise during overnight and early morning sailing.

Tortuous journey to the ship. We left home at 4.45am and arrived in Frankfurt around 10.00pm. Absolutely exhausting. Perhaps the flight option would be better, although expensive. No opportunity whatsover to explore Frankfurt. The next day on the coach journey to Passau , we were killing time and ended up waiting nearly an hour for the ship to arrive. The time in the various places was very limited and there was little or no information provided by the cruise manager. However the ship was fine and the service was very good. Food was excellent and plentiful.

Too much travel to reach the ship. three days out of nine were spent on the coach! We did not realise that there was an option to fly.

This holiday like the Rhine trip we did with you last year was relaxing, but they say the Tour Manager can make or break a holiday and we found Norman (unlike Lisa last year) was not altogether helpful with information about the cruise.
Scenery along the trip was nice, Main more picturesque than the Danube but cannot beat the Rhine.
The crew on ship were always helpful and attentive - top marks.

Unfortunately there were many road works on the way to our overnight stay in Frankfurt so we did not arrive at the hotel until 10pm. With the exception of being moored overnight in Passau all other sailings were at night. Most moorings were in industrial areas so there was a need for a shuttle bus. Unable to walk into the towns at our leisure. Give me the Rhine and Moselle any day. Could not fault the ship, crew or staff - always first class.

Very disappointed with holiday, not enough attention paid to comfort and convenience of the customer, corners seemed to be cut to economize.
Not all local guides were very user friendly.
We feel we weren't getting enough information from our tour manager.
We discovered that a lot of people on this holiday paid half what we did and the quality of holiday seemed, to us, to reflect economy.

This was our first river cruise and we really enjoyed it but, if we were to go again, would probably not book the optional excursions but ' do our own thing' because we found them to be somewhat rushed.
Informal atmosphere appealed to us and party size just about right for getting to know everybody although would have preferred to be able to choose who to sit with at mealtimes.
Comfortable cabins with good facilities.
On-board shop lacking in local information guides and basic necessities (eg toothpaste and confectionery)
Very scenic river views and interesting towns on itinerary.
Beware, though, that dinner is not included on the final night at the hotel.
On the whole, we'd be happy to use Newmarket Holidays again.
