Resort Information

Funchal is the island's principal port, seat of government and main trade centre. Bars and cafes spill out onto flower-strewn streets, and shops and stores vie for your attention. Wander the open-air market, enjoy a flutter in the famous casino and don't miss the world-renowned Botanical Gardens.

Day One

Outward travel from your selected airport to Madeira, and onward transfer to your hotel.

Day Two

On today's included excursion, we tour Funchal's famous Mercado dos Lavodores produce market, and sample Madeira wine in Adegas de Sao Francisco, the town's oldest wine-tasting establishment. Afterwards, we drive to the Botanical Gardens to see their outstanding collection of sub-tropical and tropical plants and flowers.

Day Three

Passing Camara de Lobos, a favourite painting location of Churchill, today's included excursion climbs the world's second highest cliff to Cabo Girao. We'll take lunch in Porto Moniz, overlooking the celebrated rock swimming pools, before continuing to Sao Vicente and then over Encumeda Pass to see the spectacular panoramas of the island.

Day Four

A fascinating network of irrigation channels (levadas) criss-crosses Madeira, carrying water to the vineyards and farms of the south. The channel maintenance paths provide the ready-made walking trails we'll use for the 'easy'-rated, seven-kilometre, Levada da Serra do Faial walk from Caminho do Pico do Infante to Rochao (duration approximately two and a half hours) that is today's optional excursion.

In the evening, join us for an included dinner at a typical Madeirense restaurant. A glass of Madeira, traditional espetada - tender, marinated beef grilled and served with mixed salad, potatoes and hot country bread - and entertainment from traditional folk-dancers all add up to a wonderful night.

Day Five

Enjoy a popular and fun optional excursion to Pico dos Barcelos, for the finest view of Funchal, and then on to Eira do Serrado with its spectacular view of Curral das Freiras (Nuns' Valley). In Monte we'll visit the beautiful church and take the famous wickerwork toboggan ride down to Livramento.

This afternoon, a second optional excursion brings the chance to take a jeep safari, during which you'll explore some of the hidden by-ways of the island's lush interior in an all-terrain vehicle.

Day Six

On our final included excursion we'll visit the valley nature reserve at Ribeiro Frio, where the ancient mountain settlement of Santana still retains many examples of the island's traditional 'A-frame' thatched cottages.

Later, enjoy a final evening in the hotel, or venture into Funchal for a farewell dinner at the end of a fascinating week.

Day Seven

Spend the day relaxing at the hotel or exploring the surrounding area. Our Tour Manager will be happy to suggest places to visit and things to do.

Day Eight

Transfer back to the airport for check-in and your flight home.

Exeter Couple
Excellent value for money, well organised, with an excellent Tour Manager, Sue Vickers. She is a credit to Newmarket.

Hotel a little tired in places but staff friendly and efficient. Would have been nice if the pool had been heated. Lots of good restaurants near to the hotel.

Bushey Heath, Herts. Friends
Tour manager great, hotel good room fine but did have a problem with leak but was sorted, would have liked a sea view. Food not bad a few more veggie dishes would have been nice. Staff all very pleasant and helpful. Over all would do the same again.

Overall a good holiday with an excellent tour manager (unlike the one we had in Cyprus last year!). Glad we upgraded our hotel (based on comments from fellow holidaymakers). Weak point was Eastern Tour - too much coach not enough to see to make it worthwhile

Our only disappointment in a fantastic weeks holiday was the close proximity of the hotel to a Gentlemen's Club directly opposite our rooms. Having paid the additional single person's supplement for her room, one of our party was unable to get a good night's sleep due to the noise generated from the club between midnight until 5.30 a.m. each morning. Loud music and shouted conversations also continued to disturb other members of the party. On mentioning it to the hotel reception we were informed that there were no other rooms available and therefore we spoke to the tour rep. She suggested raising the matter again with the hotel. This we did with no positive result. Would it not have been possible for those members of the party affected to be allocated other accommodation, especially as the hotel was clearly aware of the noise problem?
