Resort Information

Funchal is the island's principal port, seat of government and main trade centre. Bars and cafes spill out onto flower-strewn streets, and shops and stores vie for your attention. Wander the open-air market, enjoy a flutter in the famous casino and don't miss the world-renowned Botanical Gardens.

Itinerary

Day One

Outward travel from your selected airport to Madeira, and onward transfer to your hotel.

Day Two

On today's included excursion, we tour Funchal's famous Mercado dos Lavradores produce market, and sample Madeira wine in Adegas de Sao Francisco, the town's oldest wine-tasting establishment. Afterwards, we drive to the Botanical Gardens to see their outstanding collection of sub-tropical and tropical plants and flowers.

Day Three

Passing Camara de Lobos, a favourite painting location of Churchill, today's included excursion climbs the world's second highest cliff to Cabo Girao. We'll take lunch in Porto Moniz, overlooking the celebrated rock swimming pools, before continuing to Sao Vicente and then over Encumeada Pass to see the spectacular panoramas of the island.

Day Four

Enjoy a popular and fun optional excursion to Pico dos Barcelos, for the finest view of Funchal, and then on to Eira do Serrado with its spectacular view of Curral das Freiras (Nuns' Valley). In Monte we'll visit the beautiful church and take the famous wickerwork toboggan ride down to Livramento.

In the evening, join us for an included dinner at a typical Madeirense restaurant. A glass of Madeira, traditional espetada - tender, marinated beef grilled and served with mixed salad, potatoes and hot country bread - and entertainment from traditional folk-dancers all add up to a wonderful night.

Day Five

Today's optional excursion takes us to a fascinating network of irrigation channels (levadas) that criss-cross Madeira, carrying water to the vineyards and farms of the south. The channel maintenance paths provide the ready-made walking trails we'll use for the 'easy'-rated, seven-kilometre, Levada da Serra do Faial walk from Caminho do Pico do Infante to Rochao (duration approximately two and a half hours).

This afternoon, a second optional excursion brings the chance to take a jeep safari, during which you'll explore some of the hidden by-ways of the island's lush interior in an all-terrain vehicle.

Day Six

On our final included excursion we'll visit the valley nature reserve at Ribeiro Frio, where the ancient mountain settlement of Santana still retains many examples of the island's traditional 'A-frame' thatched cottages.

Later, enjoy a final evening in the hotel, or venture into Funchal for a farewell dinner at the end of a fascinating week.

Day Seven

Spend the day relaxing at the hotel or exploring the surrounding area. Our Tour Manager will be happy to suggest places to visit and things to do.

Day Eight

Transfer back to the airport for check-in and your flight home.

Madeira is a wonderful Island, beautiful scenery and lovely weather. All the trips, included and optional, that we attended were well organised and enjoyed by all three of us. Our hotel was in the centre of Funchal so we were able to walk to the marina in a matter of minutes and enjoy eating at the restaurants in the area.
Our hotel was lovely and the staff friendly and helpful, the food was delicious. We had our dinner at the restaurant a couple of times during our stay.

A delightful holiday in a beautiful island
I can't think why I have never visited before!
My parents stayed here at Reids Hotel for their honeymoon in Nov 1924 and I have always thought that I would like to visit. Their photographs which I took with me were much appreciated and finished up in the hotel museum!

This was a very enjoyable holiday with a small group and an excellent tour manager. The local guide was very knowledgeable and imparted us with a lot of interesting facts on all the tours and visits.

I was also impresse by the excellent drivers provided; whose skill and knowledge of the steep and narrow roads never left me nervous.

It was enjoyable and well organised. I was disappointed with the weather, rain nearly every day at some point and cooler than expected. The group was small (11) and we were in 4 different hotels so we did not see much of each other. My hotel room was small, needed a deep clean and the hotel was in need of up dating. Breakfast was adequate, not hot, coffee was nice! Meals on excursions were excellent as was evening meal and folk show. Local guide was very good.

From start to finish the entire holiday was brilliant. We did have to change airports & carrier due to the closure of East Midlands, but Birmingham was not a problem at all. The transfer to & from our hotel was very well organised thanks to our superb Tour Manager. The Hotel Orquidea was really a perfect location for Funchal, The food and accommodation were very good and nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
The included tours were second to none, this was greatly enhanced by our Tour Guide, Bus Driver and Tour Manager.
The two additional excursions were good. The Jeep Safari was fantastic, this was down to the a very knowledgeable driver and it was well worth the price. The Lavada walk and guide who was exceedingly knowledgeable was great and gave us an insight into the Lavadas. Perhaps if we return we would choose to do a little more challenging one. Non the less it was a very interesting walk.
On the excursions where a lunch / dinner was included, the locations, food and wine were first class. To be perfectly honest with you I feel there is no need to adjust this absolutely brilliant holiday.

I don't usually do package holidays, and was not sure what to expect. I enjoyed the fact that we were not all at the same hotel, that there was a mixture of included and optional trips, along with free time. Madeira was certainly discovered!
Lowish mark for the tour manager is not because she was bad, but she was nothing special in my view, and it really annoyed me that she made not the slightest effort to pronounce local place names properly, even blatantly pronouncing things wrongly immediately after hearing the local guide saying them.
